Kumihimo is the traditional Japanese technique of braiding strands of silk.
Its history back to 8th century, Heian period.
Kumihimo is used by nobles for Kimono accessories, and laces for armor and harness. In 18th century, Edo period, Kumihimo was used for Netsuke which is accessories for wallets, and Obijime which is strings for Kimono. Kumihimo became popular among samurai and merchants at Edo and one of the popular artistic items at Edo period.
Edo-Kumihimo is especially inherit “Iki” which came from the culture of middle of Edo period. It has “wabi-sabi” tradition and features cool and elegant colors.
Kumihimo at Nihonbasi Shimizu is especially elastic and supple. Its materials are 100% silk only and are only from Japan.
